Function Calling: Letting AI Use Your Business Systems

Function calling (also called tool use) lets a language model choose one of the functions you describe — with typed parameters — instead of only writing text. Your code runs the function and returns the result to the model.

It is the bridge between understanding and action, and the core building block of every AI agent we build.

A simple example

A guest writes “I need a room tomorrow for two.” The model calls check_availability(date: tomorrow, guests: 2). Your code queries the booking system and returns two options. The model then calls create_reservation with the chosen room and replies with a confirmation.

Designing good functions

Functions should be small, clearly named and strictly typed, validate every argument and enforce the user’s permissions on the server side. The model proposes; your code decides.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the AI call any function?

No — only the functions we expose, with validated arguments and server-side permission checks.

Does function calling work with every model?
