How to Make a CBSE Question Paper in Minutes (Class 5–12, with Answer Key)
Set a balanced, chapter-wise CBSE question paper with an answer key in minutes — from choosing chapters to printing with your school’s logo.

Every CBSE teacher knows the routine: a unit test is due on Monday, the chapters are fixed, and Sunday evening disappears into choosing questions, counting marks, formatting sections and — last of all — writing the answer key. This guide walks through how to set a good CBSE paper quickly, and how a free generator such as ExamBee’s CBSE question paper generator can do the mechanical parts for you.
Step 1: Decide what the paper is for
Before choosing a single question, be clear about the purpose:
- Class or unit test — one or two chapters, 20–30 marks, mostly short questions.
- Periodic or mid-term test — several chapters, 40–50 marks, a mix of question types.
- Term or pre-board exam — the full portion so far, 80 marks, structured like the board paper.
The purpose decides the number of chapters, the total marks and the time allowed. For term and pre-board papers, keep the latest sample paper and marking scheme published by CBSE for your class beside you: they show the current section structure and typology, which change from time to time.
Step 2: Pick the chapters you have actually taught
A paper should test what was taught — nothing more. Choose chapter by chapter (or topic by topic for a short test). On ExamBee you pick the board, class and subject, then tick exactly the chapters or topics you covered. For example:
- CBSE Class 10 Mathematics question paper
- CBSE Class 10 Science question paper
- CBSE Class 8 English question paper
Every class from Class 5 to Class 12 is covered for English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Computer Science.
Step 3: Plan sections so the marks add up
The most common mistake in a hand-made paper is marks that don’t add up. Plan sections first, then fill them:
| Section | Question type | Questions × marks | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Multiple choice | 10 × 1 | 10 |
| B | Fill in the blanks / True–False | 5 × 1 | 5 |
| C | Short answer | 5 × 3 | 15 |
| Total | 30 |
ExamBee checks this for you: you set the total marks and how many questions of each type and marks each, and the sections must add up to the total before it builds the paper.
Step 4: Balance the difficulty
A paper that is all easy recall doesn’t tell you who has understood the chapter; one that is all hard discourages the class. A sensible default for a school test is roughly 40% easy, 40% medium and 20% hard, adjusted for your students. ExamBee lets you choose easy, medium, hard or a mixed paper.
Step 5: Review, edit and add your school details
No generator replaces your judgement. Read every question as a student would:
- Is it clearly worded and within the syllabus you taught?
- Does any question give away the answer to another?
- Is the mix of chapters fair?
In ExamBee you can swap a question for another one, reorder, delete, or regenerate a whole section. Add your school’s name, address, contact details and logo, and choose a paper design so the paper looks official.
Step 6: Download the paper and the answer key
Download a print-ready PDF (or images, or an Excel sheet if you want to adapt it further). ExamBee generates a separate answer key with every paper, which saves the slowest part of the job and makes checking consistent across sections and teachers.
Tips for better CBSE papers
- Mix question types. Objective questions test breadth; short and long answers test understanding and expression.
- Spread questions across chapters in proportion to the time you spent teaching them.
- Avoid textbook-identical wording for every question, so students can’t answer purely from memory.
- Keep a bank of your own papers. ExamBee’s My Papers saves every paper you create, so next year’s test starts from this year’s.
