How to Make an ICSE Question Paper: A Practical Guide for Teachers
ICSE papers reward clear, well-structured answers. Here’s how to set one that tests understanding — and how to cut the time it takes.

ICSE is known for a detailed syllabus and for rewarding answers that are complete and well expressed. That makes setting a good internal paper both important and time-consuming: the paper has to cover the chapters fairly, test understanding rather than recall, and come with a marking guide that every teacher applies the same way.
Here is a practical way to do it — and where a free tool like ExamBee’s ICSE question paper generator saves the most time.
Start from the scheme, not the questions
Write down the scheme of the paper before choosing any question:
- Portion — the chapters or topics covered.
- Total marks and duration — e.g. 40 marks / 1½ hours for a periodic test.
- Sections — which question types, how many, and marks for each.
- Difficulty mix — how much is straightforward and how much stretches the stronger students.
For term and pre-board exams in Classes 9–12, model the structure on the latest specimen papers published by the council for your subject, since formats are revised over time.
Choose chapters class by class
ExamBee covers ICSE from Class 5 to Class 12 in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Computer Science. Pick the class and subject, then tick only the chapters you have finished, for example:
- ICSE Class 10 Mathematics question paper
- ICSE Class 10 Science question paper
- ICSE Class 9 English question paper
- ICSE Class 7 Social Science question paper
Use objective questions to cover breadth
Short objective questions — multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blanks, one-word answers — let you check many concepts quickly and fairly. They work well as a compulsory first section that touches every chapter in the portion.
Use written answers to test understanding
ICSE answers are judged on reasoning and presentation, so include short-answer questions that ask students to explain, give reasons, distinguish or apply. Keep the wording precise: “Give two reasons why…” is easier to mark consistently than “Discuss…”.
Make the marks add up — exactly
Totals that don’t match the cover page are an easy mistake when papers are edited at the last minute. In ExamBee you set the total and the questions-and-marks for each type, and it won’t build a paper whose sections don’t add up to that total.
Review like a moderator
Before printing, read the paper once as a moderator would:
- Is every question within the portion?
- Is the language age-appropriate and unambiguous?
- Are the chapters represented in proportion to teaching time?
- Is there a fair spread of easy, medium and hard questions?
Swap or regenerate any question that doesn’t fit, add your school’s name and logo, and choose a paper design.
Don’t skip the answer key
A good answer key with marks per step makes checking faster and fairer across sections. ExamBee produces a separate answer key PDF with every paper — share it with co-teachers before evaluation starts.
